A Nurse's Health Guide for Sending Child(ren) to School

Being at school is important for a child's health, social and academic well being.

Send your child(ren) to school when they are:

• Generally healthy - they can attend even if they
  • have a cold which may include a runny nose and/or cough
  • have eye drainage, eye itchiness or eye redness
  • have a stomach ache without a fever
  • have a mild rash without other symptoms
  • have head lice (should be treated)
     
• Participating in normal day to day activities

If your child is avoiding school, it may be related to anxiety. If you are concerned that your child may be experiencing
anxiety, please reach out to your teacher(s), school counselor or social worker, the school nurse or other school staff to discuss and develop a plan to help your child stay in school.

Symptoms of anxiety may include (but are not limited to): headache, stomach ache, loss of appetite, fatigue, etc.

To stay well and prevent illness, make sure your child:

• Gets adequate rest - (8-10 hours) is best - put away devices and electronics
• Gets good nutrition - Protein along with fruits and vegetables
• Hydrates frequently - (6-8) 8 ounce glasses of water; limit soda and energy drinks; bring a water bottle to school every day
• Covers their cough
• Maintains frequent and good hand hygiene

Students are not permitted to spray cologne, perfume, body spray, or any aerosol products in restrooms, hallways, or other shared spaces within the school building. These products can trigger serious reactions for individuals with allergies, asthma, or sensitivities.

There are 16 career clusters that students can participate in, ranging from Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, Architecture & Construction, Manufacturing, Transportation to Health Science, Finance, STEM, and IT.

Key Components of the YA Program: 

• On the job experience: 450 hours minimum of paid work experience in a desired career pathway.
• Related Instruction: Courses related to your career path, taken at your high school or local technical college.
• Support: Your school, YA team, and employer will all provide support through each step of the program.

• Create networking opportunities with potential employers.

The Kress Library is hosting an event called DnD One Shot
Friday, October 30th from 10 - Noon

Have you heard about games like Dungeons & Dragons but have never had the opportunity to give it a try? Now is your chance! A Dungeon Master will guide a group of rag-tag adventurers through a free to attend one-shot game. Though designed for beginners, players of any experience are welcome! Registration Required here. Event is for ages 14-18.

Oral Health Partnership visits schools--including West High School--to provide essential dental services to students who qualify. Services include exams, x-rays, cleanings and other key care. Please complete this form to see if your teen qualifies for this dental service, which will be provided at the school building.

Emplify/Bellin and Children's Wisconsin have opened a new walk in mental health clinic for students/families.

Students are required to show their student ID upon entering the building, and will use their ID throughout their day to check into classes, get a pass and more. If a student loses or breaks their ID, they will need to purchase a new ID for $5 in the Main Office. 

Any student who needs an ID should visit the Main Office.

Service hours may include volunteering in the community, helping with things like clean up, set up, child care, etc. Many events students assist with at school may also be considered volunteer hours. Graduating students who earn 100 or more services hours will receive special recognition by wearing a special cord and/or medallion, which is noted in the ceremony program.

In order to receive recognition for service hours, each activity needs to be reported using a blue service sheet form, which can be picked up from Career Center (room 117), Student Services or the Main Office during the school day.

Any student parking on school grounds must have a valid parking pass. Parking pass applications are available at https://west.gbaps.org/academics/parking-passes. The fee for a Parking Pass is $75 per year. Students with a parking pass may park in the east-side lot (closest to the Gym and Door 9) in the white stalls only.

The following rules apply to parking at West High School with a valid parking pass. Students who violate these rules may receive a ticket from city parking:

• No parking in the west-side lot near the main entrance
• No parking in yellow stalls (there are plenty of white stalls in the east-side lot)
• No parking without a current parking pass displayed from the rearview mirror and visible from outside
• No parking in multiple spots or blocking walkways

Families can access the school breakfast, lunch, and after-school dinner menu on NutriSlice!

Students at West High School receive breakfast, lunch and dinner at no cost--they just need to come pick it up from the cafeteria!

Students in high schools have a number of entrees to choose from each day. For lunch: The homestyle line option changes each day (view on NutriSlice menu website on the calendar). Other daily options include (listed below the calendar on NutriSlice): taco fiesta line, sub deli line, pizza, hot sandwiches (including veggie burgers), rotating specialty salads and grab & go boxes, fruit, yogurt, and granola parfaits, and a full salad bar. If a student chooses to have food delivered to them from an outside location, they are only permitted to pick up deliveries from Door 9, and only during their lunch period.

All Students:

• Students are required to use a clear backpack or tote bag while in the school building. If a student arrives with a non-clear backpack, they will be able to take necessary materials with them. Students’ non-clear backpacks will be tagged with the student’s name and placed in a locked room, to be picked up at the end of the day from the Main Office.  West High School is not responsible for lost or misplaced non-clear bags. 
• If a student does not have a clear backpack/tote, they must enter through the Main Entrance, Door 1 (not the Cafeteria). 

Co-Curricular Activities:

• Students who participate in co-curricular activities are permitted to carry non-transparent bags to store items pertaining to those particular activities (i.e. band, athletics, theatre arts, etc.). 

• All athletic equipment bags should be taken to the Main Entrance where they will be tagged with the student’s name and placed in a locked room to be picked up at the end of the day (by 3:15p) from the Thune Center.  All bags are subject to be searched at any point.
• If a student is coming to school with their instrument, these instruments and cases will be taken and stored in the lockers located inside or near the band/orchestra/choir room for the duration of the day. These materials will only be accessible during class time or for rehearsals after school. All instruments are subject to be searched at any point.

Student Attendance at Athletic Events

Students may NOT attend events if they have:

• OSS (out of school suspension) the day of event
• Unexcused absences the day of the event

All absences must be excused by 3rd hour.
An attendance scanner will be used at event entrance. If the scanner gives an alert that a student may not attend, they will need to leave the event. We will not be checking for eligibility ahead of time or contacting parents prior to events.

If you haven’t already set up a Canvas Observer Account, we encourage you to do so. With this account, you can:

• View your student’s coursework and grades

• Track assignments and due dates

• Monitor progress on formative and summative assessments

• Customize your notification preferences

Lunch detentions are given based on a student's number of tardies. If a student is tardy to four classes, they will earn 1 (one) lunch detention. If a student is late to 12 classes, they will given 3 (three) lunch detentions. 

• Tardies are reviewed each Monday
• Students will be notified during their 3rd period class
• Parent/Guardian will be notified of the detention, typically via text through our TalkingPoints system
• At the start of their lunch period, a student with a lunch detention should report directly to the Thune Center (room 134). Students will be escorted to the cafeteria to grab lunch.
