A group of students march across a track carrying an American flag, with bleachers full of spectators in the background.

Students and staff at West High School gathered at Del Marcelle Stadium to honor the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call on September 11, 2001, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks through the school's annual 9/11 Stair Climb.

The remembrance ceremony began with a moment of silence, followed by the National Anthem performed by the West High School Band under the direction of Mrs. Scherer. Green Bay Metro Fire Chief Ray Fuiten also addressed students on behalf of the fire department, reflecting on the sacrifices made by firefighters and other first responders on 9/11.

Local firefighters from Green Bay Station #3 joined the event, bringing a fire truck and firefighter equipment to help students better understand the physical demands faced by firefighters.

Students had the opportunity to try on firefighter gear and climb the stadium steps while wearing the equipment. The experience was designed to help students appreciate the weight, heat and physical challenges firefighters encounter as part of their daily work.

The National Guard also participated in the event, bringing a Humvee and weighted backpacks for students to try. The hands-on activities gave students another opportunity to experience the physical demands associated with service and emergency response.

Following the remembrance ceremony, students and staff were invited to climb the stairs, providing an opportunity to reflect on the events of September 11 and the courage demonstrated by those who responded.

Student athletes Urijah Moore and Jerion Arts-Booker carried the flag, leading students, staff and firefighters up the bleachers.

The event also served as West High School's kickoff for Fuel Up to Play 60, a program sponsored by the NFL and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin that encourages students to eat healthier foods and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

As part of the kickoff, Kemps Distributing donated 500 cartons of chocolate milk for participants. The Green Bay Packers also participated, with a special guest distributing Packers and Fuel Up to Play 60 gear.

By combining remembrance, physical activity and hands-on learning, West High School's annual stair climb gave students a meaningful way to honor the 25th anniversary of September 11 while recognizing the service and sacrifice of first responders.
